the 12v power outlet that can’t be called a cigarette lighter anymore because they don’t actually have one anymore, just a black cap on it.
But I still call it a cigarette lighter. Anyone else? :p

My E90 came with the “smoker’s package” so it had the cigarette lighter where I plug my radar detector in. So it’s still a cigarette lighter.

Yes. Yes I do. They can call it a power outlet, but it’s still a lighter to me.

yep - “I’m gonna plug my phone into the cigarette lighter.” Interestingly enough my nephew just asked me why I call it that just this past weekend...

It’s kinda neat how it was adapted over time for different uses. It’s conception was just to get 12v to the cab and be able to heat up a coil, but as people started smoking less and using accessories more they design was able to stay the same.
I think it’s really cool that I can charge my phone in my 51 year old car.

If it has the clicky-hot-burny thing it is a cigarette lighter, if not, just a power outlet.

*looks at the plethora of ash trays and the cig lighter in my 84 e28* I guess I kind of have to. But yeah I always will call it a cigarette lighter.

Yep. Two of my cars are old enough that they have the actual cigarette lighter in there anyway. The 2001 does not.

It’s always been “cigarette lighter” to me. But when flipping through my car’s factory service manual, I noticed that Ford’s official term (even in 1994) was CIGAR lighter. Huh.

Guilty. When they're in the dash like a lighter would be I still call them that.

I do. I guess that makes me old? I’m 32. When I was a kid it seemed like 50% or more of the adults I knew smoked and every car had an actual cigarette lighter in the outlet as well as an ash tray.

Oh wow they started taking them out THAT early? Because I know the Focus still had them in 2002
The 2001 Saturn L-series has a cigarette lighter up front, and a black cap over the one in the back. But the lighterless one in the back does have an ashtray next to it. The best part is that the owners manual says not to put a cigarette lighter in the back one!
How old are your other cars?

My 99 civic and my brothers 98 accord didn't have them either.

My other two are 1991 and 1993. Just driving the '91 today with a phone charger plugged in, I was thinking about the idea of charging my phone in my antique car.

I always have.
I started driving in 95 and all my 80s-90s cars had actual lighters. Even my 2003 protege5 still had one without being an option. When I bought my 2010 sx4 it was an accessory port. The lighter was an option, meaning they have to change the socket. I was a smoker for just over 20 years. I quit in 2014. I still a lighter plug, I just don't say cigarette.
My 2014 pathfinder, and my wife's 2011 Elantra both have accessory ports.

I just bought a new one for the Niva. The old one still worked, it was just too deep for any of my accessories to actually get power... they didn’t reach all the way to the bottom to pick up the positive. Because Lada I guess...
I’m actually a little emabarrased how long it took me to figure that one out. I’ve actually started campfires with the lighter, that’s how well it worked, and it put out a solid 11.9V, but I got absolutely nothing plugging in phone chargers.

Now I’m really curious when the turning point was/who the early adopters were. I feel like I missed a big chunk of history going straight from a ‘99 to a ‘12 vehicle. The Hondas didn’t even have ash trays - I feel like my ‘99 Sentra didn't have a lighter (probably lost) but I definitely kept spare change in an ash tray.

I do lol.
My FC has nice cigarette lighter/ashtray design in my opinion. The ashtray lid flips up and sits flush when closed.

No, it’s always been a cigar lighter. Both my Bentley and Rolls have cigar lighters.
Seriously though, Yes it’s always been and will always remain a cigarette lighter to me. Much the same as a 4WD or 4x4 wagon, recently in Australia some dickhead decided to start calling 4x4 wagons SUV’s!! FFS There’s nothing sporty about a 4x4 wagon, Utilities are cars without roofs over the load area. Only part of that acronym that gets it right is the ‘V’ for vehicle.
I’m old.

Crusty is a 1995 and has a Cigar lighter and a power port.
My ex wife had an 01 Cavalier that had a black “lighter" in the lighter port and a power port in the console box. I always thought that was odd.

Definitely. Fun fact: Mercedes, to this day, calls the main front one a cigar lighter whether it has the smokers package with the igniter or not.

I have noticed while building various cars using online configurators that it is an option for the most part these days, and one you will not likely see unless you personally spec the car. I do not smoke, but for some reason I prefer to have the actual cigarette lighter over the black plastic cap.

Depends on who I’m talking to...generally, yes cigarette lighter, but if I’m chatting with someone born in the midish 90s or younger I’ll say outlet or 12V or something (I don’t like accessory port...too generic)

When I was in high school and thought smoking was cool, okay maybe I never actually thought that but I still did it, my 94 4Runner had a working lighter that got used a few times. My 04 Grand Cherokee just has power outlets.

My 2008 M6 has a real cigarette lighter (who the fuck would smoke in that car anyway!?!?) aaaaaaaand I honestly don’t remember whether or not my 2008 Forester has one.
